Setting up a Motorola Device as a Modem on a Mac
November 18, 2007 . Posted in apple.
Everything is sooo easy on Macs… Actually if you are reading this page as a result of a search rather than because you simply subscribed to my blog then you might disagree.
Okay: problem of the day: setting up my motorola razr v3x phone as an external modem.
1. Switching bluetooth on and pairing the phone. That is done easily by just clicking the bluetooth icon at the top of your screen (status bar) and then selecting "Set up Bluetooth Device"
2. Connecting to the internet. Well at this point you should be able to go to System Preferences -> Network -> Click Bluetooth -> Click Connect. If you tick "Show Modem in the Status Bar" you will be able to see more information soon.
3. Oops we have not provided a phone number. Oh well… see step 4
4. Phone number: Vodafone NZ uses *99# but when I just provided that I failed to connect and I got this message back: "A crossed connection has been detected. Please verify your settings and try again." So I did exactly what it said: I clicked "Set up Bluetooth Device" -> Selected my Moto in the list and clicked cog -> Configure this device -> now under phone Vendor I just selected Motorola and then the model GPRS (GSM/3G) -> The APN differs from country to country but for nz I used www.vodafone.net.nz -> and now I selected the CID 2 (that is the index of the internet profile that I want to use from the list of internet profiles on my phone (Menu-> Vodafone Live -> Internet Profiles)). Don't panic when you see the CID. As long as the CID index ( e.g. 1) uses the APN that you have in that profile on your phone you will be okay. Save everything and go back to the Network page.
5. Click Connect again. Now, not only did I not see the error aforementioned, but I actually saw my device authenticating and TADA: success!
Cheers
p.s. like I said everything is soooo easy. Just fixed Adium to work with Windows Live! (DNS issue) If you are interested let me know…
