Google Apps For Your Domain. Problems after Hostname change
Posted by Nick in Google, The Wonderful Internet on April 27, 2009
I have my domain managed by Google Apps. Yesterday I created a new site using Google Sites and decided to have a nice hostname, say http://mynewsite.tmro.net
UPDATE: It appears that the email MX records were messed up as well! Luckily after updating the MX records I received quite a few emails that had been queued so I imagine nothing got lost…
Google Android confirmed for 4th Quarter
Since then, we’ve been working with our Open Handset Alliance partners to incorporate much of that feedback, and finish the first devices. Since those devices are shipping in the fourth quarter, the platform is now converging on a final “Android 1.0″ version.
The 0.9 SDK brings about a ton of new stuff:
- The new Home screen is included, along with a ton of UI changes for 1.0.
- Some new applications are also included: an Alarm Clock, Calculator, Camera, Music player, Picture viewer, and Messaging (for SMS/MMS conversations.)
- Several new development tools were added, such as a graphical preview for XML layouts for users of Eclipse, and a tool for constructing 9-patch images.
- The source of the now-obsolete version from the M5 early-look SDK.
- A number of new APIs are fleshed out and improved, and others are now close to their final forms for 1.0.
- Tons of bugs were fixed, of course. (If you had problems with the MediaPlayer, try it now!)
So Google are trying to win back the developers after the terrible SDK mishap, when only the top 50 developers (Android Developer Challenge) were granted access to the “new” SDK while the rest of the community was left out in the dark. I wonder if it won’t be too late now that the iPhone is about to be rolled out in 21 new countries (22nd August).
UPDATE: The new SDK unfortunately no longer includes a number of APIs such as GTalkService (for security reasons), and the Bluetooth API. Quote: Due to significant API changes in the upstream open-source project and due to the timeline of getting certain Bluetooth profile implementations certified, a comprehensive Bluetooth API will not be possible or present in Android 1.0

Google Android – WTF?
Wazzup google? Where is the first Android phone? When will there be a final SDK? Should we all just go get openmokos and iphones?
Oh well…
Update (a day later): Apparently the video if fixed now. Good on ya. Can we have a final SDK now, please?
Google Cars seen in Wellington
Where they here because Google plans to add Street View to the maps of Wellington?
Where they here because the Wellington maps are outdated (The Terrace tunnel was not yet on the maps when I last checked)?
Or maybe it was just a fanboy driving around showing off his google stickers on his black Holden (Opel) Astra…
Who knows?

Google Sites replaces JotSpot
I consider myself an early adopter when it comes to Google products. Today I received an email from google being told that Google Sites is now available.
I have been waiting for it for a long time and although it is a beta, I was very surprised to see how unpolished it is. Google acquired Jot quite some time ago and one would think they had enough time to integrate Jot into google's suite of applications. Well it is my opinion they need more time.
Google sites is available for all Google Apps owners.
Here are my (current) suggestions for the Sites team:
- on http://sites.google.com it is not very clear how to add sites to an existing account.
– browse to http://sites.google.com and then click on the Google Sites logo. You'll get a 404… Ooops!
- Log in into your Google Apps account. Click Add applications and then select Sites. Now change the sites URL to point to a customer one. Continue and Save. Browse (or just click) your custom Sites location. You'll bump into another 404
Despite these issues I do believe Sites will make small organizations very happy: making sites public or private, collaboration tools (sharing docs, wikis, calendars, chat, etc), high availability, more than 1 channel to access information (mobile, web), etc.
The OS is moving to the Web…

Google AdSense – Google Account
Few people know that to login into Google AdSense people had to use a different set of credentials.
Well that is not the case anymore as Google has started to migrate the Google AdSense accounts to the Google Accounts. Basically what this means to you an me is that we will be able to use the same login for our GMail, iGoogle, Google Docs, Reader, etc… oh and Orkut too

Google Android
Google's Android SDK is out. You'll be hearing from this Blog how I find it after I install it!
One of the projects I am involved in will be built for Android as well so we'll see how that goes.
For the moment just enjoy the resources available here: http://code.google.com/android

Google's OpenSocial
Like I said in a post some time ago Google is talking on Facebook.
According to this NY Times article Google's OpenSocial will "begin introducing a common set of standards to allow software developers to write programs for Google’s social network, Orkut, as well as others, including LinkedIn, hi5, Friendster, Plaxo and Ning".
Oh well, playing catch-up is not really Google's strongest point. Innovation on the other hand, is. Let's see what will be new and cool about this framework once it's out…
Cheers…
Gmail support both POP and IMAP, for free…
There's not much to say really? Isn't it awesome?
