Google Reader – fixed then broken

Monday, October 1st, 2007

Just when I thought that Google Reader  is fixed I found that the feed reader tabs (settings, list view, expanded view) is now spanning across two rows…

To tell the truth the browser I am using is in an Alpha state (Mozilla Firefox Gran Paradiso 3 Alpha 8) but it does pass the Acid Test 2 successfully: http://www.webstandards.org/files/acid2/test.html

So although I am not sure it is Google's bug or my browser's I do hope the "guilty" party will fix it!

Google Reader missing toolbar

Thursday, September 27th, 2007

I noticed a few days ago that Google Reader does not have the same toolbar as GMail and Calendar and most other non-labs Google products.
Initially I thought it was something wrong with my browser but it seems to be same case on both Firefox and Opera.

Another interesting aspect is that GMail is still BETA while Reader does not have this label anywher, nor does it have the Labs tag… That is quite strange if you ask me, especially since GMail seems to be heaps more stable than Reader.

Reader does not seem quite as polished as other Google applications… See my other posts regarding the Wii issues…

Google takes on Facebook. November 5th announcement

Monday, September 24th, 2007

According to TechCrunch Google is planning to add a social layer on top of the entire suite of Google services.

TechCrunch says:
"Google will announce a new set of APIs on November 5 that will allow developers to leverage Google’s social graph data. They’ll start with Orkut and iGoogle (Google’s personalized home page), and expand from there to include Gmail, Google Talk and other Google services over time."

What I find most interesting though is that  what Google may be planning is significantly more open than Facebook and the like – allowing third parties to both push and pull data, into and out of Google and non-Google applications.

Considering that Google now has Orkut, Google Shared Stuff, Picasa, Calendar and more I can see how this could prove to be a "killer" move… it's just a matter of time…

Google Share takes on del.icio.us and integrates with Facebook

Friday, September 21st, 2007

Share the Internet using Google! Is there something they won't do?

Google has quietly launched Google Shared Stuff so from now on whenever I stumle upon a cool website I will be able to share it with my friends by simply clicking one button!!!

First you add this button to your browser and then "The Google Email/Share button allows you to easily share or email any web-page with your friends. Your shared stuff page is publicly visible and allows you to share stuff with your friends and on the web. Whenever you see the Google sharing button, on our sites or any other, click it to share the current webpage in whatever way you prefer!".

You also get a dashboard where you can see all your shared stuff… one could call this social networking??? Does this signal the death of Orkut?
What I find quite cool is that from here one can integrate with: Facebook, Digg, del.icio.us and more…

At this time the website seem to be a little bit unstable, resources do not seem to load properly but I am sure it is just a matter of hours until it will be working smoothly…

Hope you found this useful.

Google Docs adds Presentation

Wednesday, September 19th, 2007

The Google Office is almost complete!

Google Presentation has arrived. Just log on into your docs.google.com and choose New Presentation and you're off…

There are heaps of interesting features (most of them are already available for the other Google Docs applications) but by far my favourite one is that while running the presentation you can have an audience and comment on the content of the slides…

This will make online presentations and training a little easier.

So if we think about this Google Presentation competes with Online Presentation Tools like Webex.

It will be interesting to see how Google Docs will integrate with JotSpot. I can only imagine the potential of having Google Docs, Google Apps for your Domain and JotSpot together… Lots of SMAs will be quite excited!

What do you think?

Google Reader has a Wii problem

Sunday, September 9th, 2007

Uh, I used to love to read Google Reader on my Nintendo Wii… Unfortunately, the latest Google Reader release broke the integration and made Google Reader un-Readable (?!?)… Apart from the problems that I posted previously it looks like Google Reader has a Wii problem too :)

I am sure it will soon be fixed so keep trying to load the page, it will work, sooner or later…

Cheers…

UPDATE: 2007/09/17 I have just checked and it looks like Google have fixed quite a few problems with Reader including the ones that I wrote about… Good on you Google!

Google Reader makes me happy. 1000+ posts now displayed

Wednesday, September 5th, 2007

Finally I can see in Google Reader more than just 100 posts per subscription… This is bound to make me hurt even more when clicking “Mark all as read”.

There is not much more to say about this, is there?

Cheers…

UPDATE: It seems that this Reader Update has broken the Integration with Blogger. Even more, it appears that the Google Reader Clip does no longer work: the “Put a clip on your website” page has a blank text field (after the To use this clip, copy and paste this HTML snippet into any web page that supports JavaScript) That will be difficult to do with an empty box :)

UPDATE 2: The same page – “Put a clip on your website” – seems to have been hastily developed since the “Close Window” link / button does not work. There is actually no action associated with it in the code :)
